Student Government

So, there is a lot of talk going on about the SGA and Student Union. I was lucky enough to have the time to sit in on a meeting between both the SGA and SDS (Students for Democratic Society). Many great ideas were shared, and many misconceptions were cleared up.

What do YOU think? Should there be a student union? Do you think we should have direct democracy on campus? What about the SGA? Do you feel sufficiently knowledgeable on how their process works? What do you think can be done to raise the dismal level of student participation? What would you like to see happen with our student government?

I definetly support a free and open Student Union but the message that I heard coming out of that discussion was that the Student Union would only exist under the SGA.

What would be the point of that and who would really want to join it if the SGA still has all the power and the real voice?

Wouldn't real reform come from petitioning the student body to simply replace the SGA with the Student Union? It seems like after all that drama, it would be pretty easily supported.

What exactly is a Student Union?

I feel more comfortable and knowledge able about the SGA than the Student Union. People just don't choose to utilize the SGA to its full potential and the SGA does a pretty crappy job of following through with its commitments. I think that it has done some things better recently but it has come no where near opening its arms to the general student body. Replacing it with something else however may not make sense, especially replacing it with what I have heard described.

Some questions for you, Outsider, I feel that you should have actually added some more information to your article rather than just saying "many great ideas were shared and many misconceptions were cleared up." that really tells us nothing. or me nothing at least.

Some questions I have about the whole situation:

How many people attended this meeting between the SDS and SGA?
What exactly is a Student Union?
How would it be different from the SGA?
How could a direct democracy work when you can't require people to vote?
Wouldn't this create a campus run by a select few people and wouldn't this allow students to stack the votes on specific issues?
Has there been any talk about altering the stucture or format of the SGA before entirely scrapping the institution?
Does completely different mean better?
Has there been any progress with the new committee the SGA created to evaluate the constitution and by-laws? Have any changes been made?
How large would you categorize the Student Union movement on campus?
How informed do you think the supporters of this movement are?
Do you think it is fueled by a true desire for change or because people tend to dislike the SGA because they feel it "does nothing"?
